Denis from iPhones forum gives an advice how to determine the version of iPhone’s firmware directly in Apple Store, not opening an original packing.

It is necessary to look at the serial number printed on a box, you need to find numbers after 7v7 and 7s7: if there will be numbers 38 and lower, you can buy this iPhone - probability that this phone will have 1.0.2 firmware or lower is very high; if there will be numbers from 40 and higher, the probability of 1.1.1 firmware is very high.

If you have already unpacked phone, follow to advice of AppleSPB:

- Open Emergency Call menu
- Type *3001#12345#*
- Press on Green Phone button
- Go to Versions tab
