The P-Flip folding power dock doubles as a desktop stand. (Credit: Dexim) The Dexim P-Flip is two, two, two products in one. It’s a long-lasting external battery for your iPhone and a desktop stand that keeps it propped up nicely. This folding, three-position dock bears more than a passing resemblance to flip-phones of yore, albeit one that’s even thinner and more compact. Consequently, it slips easily into a pocket. This despite packing a 2,000mAh rechargeable battery, which Dexim says will give eight extra hours of talk time, 15 hours of games or movies, or a whopping 80 hours of music. (I have my doubts about that last one.) The P-Flip charges via an included USB cable, with blue LEDs that flash or turn solid depending on whether it’s charging or charged. As a desktop dock, the P-Flip works like a charm. It’s great if you want to use your iPhone as, say, a clock or digital photo frame. However, although you can tip the dock on its side for watching movies and whatnot, this keeps your screen almost perpendicular to the surface. It’s not angled up enough for comfortable viewing. That’s my only real disappointment with the P-Flip, which is otherwise excellent. At $54.95, it costs less than some other power packs that add more bulk and have smaller batteries. The product is compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as all iPod Touch models. I’m liking it, but with a better landscape orientation I’d be loving it.
Zoom User Reviews Web designers, graphic artists and typographers can now use the WhatTheFont app on the iPhone to track down and identify fonts they are curious about using uploaded pictures. The app is free and is like Shazam for fonts. Ever wonder what font is used in your favorite cereal box, TV show, or perhaps to print your favorite T-shirt? Just open up the WhatTheFont app on you iPhone, take a close-up picture of the text and upload it to their servers. The app lets your crop off the exact part of the picture that has the font for better precision. The service works great if the pics that are not blurry, taken with solid background colors, and in well lit areas. Also be sure to use the built in crop tool to get a nice clean cutout of the text. After you tap upload, the app scans your text and breaks them down into letters with what it thinks the letters are. and returns back a list of possible fonts that match your uploaded clippings. Keep the letters you want and tap “Identify” to see a list of font matches returned. Tapping each font in the results loads the font details page where you can see a sample of how the alphabet looks along with the font history and the font designers contact details. From here you can email the font details or view more details about the font and purchase it at the WhatTheFont website from within the iPhone app. This 3rd Party App is available at the Apple iTunes AppStore. Zoom User Reviews The LA Phil have come out with a cool iPhone app called Bravo Gustavo that makes let you know how it feels to be a world class orchestra conductor. The free iPhone app from the Los Angeles Philharmonic puts you in the shoes of condcutor Gustavo Dudamel so you can experience the rush of a maestro. The app is quite simple really but works flawlessly. Your iPhone or iPod becomes the conductor’s baton. A song starts to play and you just have to shake or snap your iPhone or iPod touch to change the tempo and instruments. You can also do it by tapping the screen, but what fun is that, right? At this time the only has 2 pieces of music for you to conduct. You get March to the Scaffold, and Dream of a Witche’s Sabbath. Pick any song and after you hear the first note, swing your iPhone or iPod touch to move to the next bit of the song. It’s actually quite realistic, if you have sense of timing for music and rhythm. and makes you feel like you are really directing the orchestra if you close your eyes for a few seconds while you conduct a song. Overall we enjoyed playing with the Bravo Gustavo iPhone app and found it to be quite original use of the built in accelerometer. Although there are only two songs, we can’t really complain since its a free app. Download it and see if you’ve got what it takes to become a conductor with the LA Phil.
