Zoom User Reviews FEATURED APP In a stunning demonstration of living up to its name, Spanish-based developer, Small Wonders has released Battle of Puppets, a wonderfully designed variant of real-time, side-scrolling castle-destroying strategy games. In Battle of Puppets, you are the puppeteer and under your guidance, you and your puppets will take Broadway by storm. If you’re unfamiliar with this type of game, you basically have some resources and a few different units available to you. The object of the game is to storm the enemy castle by building units, managing your resources and protecting your castle. With BoP, everything is set on a stage and as you advance through the game, you duke it out ‘on stage’ across America. You have 5 different enemy armies, each themed in different famous operas. There are 6 ‘professions’ that you can unlock, each allowing you to cast a special attack on the enemy opera army. Battle of Puppets is a game with a simple concept that is easy for anyone to follow. All controls are touch-based and the game comes with in-game hints as well as a tutorial in the main menu. It is a single player game but there are 3 available save spots, which is nice if you have someone else who likes to play with your apps a lot. There are also 3 modes of gameplay; however as of this release, there are no achievements or online scoreboard functionality. I don’t know if they are planning to add it but it might be a good idea to do so to add potential replay value. Even so, it still is quite the entertaining little time-sink so if you’re prone to losing whole parts of your day to your iPhone, watch out for this one, you might very well be on your way to becoming a master puppeteer. You may find a striking similarity to the PS3 game LittleBigPlanet in BoP’s design elements. Actually, you can tell right away that great effort and care was put into designing this app, especially evident in the game’s attention to detail. Whether it is the lovely background artwork that changes with the (in-game) time and weather to the theatre-themed menu settings to the adorable way puppets are lifted up-stage once they are ‘killed,’ Small Wonders really made sure their game was a complete package. Also enjoyable are the music and sound effects, both of which are lighthearted and pleasing to the ear. Every part of the app is in sync with the other and all work together to give Battle of Puppets a wonderfully cheery-without-being-garish sort of atmosphere. Battle of Puppets is a beautifully arranged game, with stimulating backdrops and endearing character units. Battle of the Puppets is currently in the App Store for $1.99. If you’re looking for an nice, unique little castle-destroyer game that is tied together with a fantastic, love-at-first-sight kind of design, definitely check out Battle of Puppets.
